Zainab Hawa Bangura was born in Yonibana, Sierra Leone. She holds a bachelor's degree from Fourah Bay College in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and advanced diplomas in insurance management from the University of London and Nottingham University. She was Sierra Leone's minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation between 2007 and 2010, and minister of health and sanitation between 2010 and 2012. She was the United Nations special representative of the secretary-general on sexual violence in conflict from 2012 to 2017. Bangura has received numerous awards for her social activism, including the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellowship and the National Endowment for Democracy's Democracy Award.
